Agustin Roman was born on May 5, 1928, on a rural farm in the municipality of San Antonio de los Banos (Havana, Cuba). He was the first child born to a humble peasant family. He entered the seminary in 1951 and in 1959, six months after the triumph of the revolution, he was ordained a priest. In 1961, he was expelled from Cuba at gunpoint and forced, along with 129 other priests and a bishop, to leave the Island aboard a Spanish ship. After a brief stay in Spain, he worked as a missionary in Chile for over four years. He settled in Miami in 1966 and almost immediately was entrusted with the construction of a sanctuary to honor Our Lady of Charity (patroness of Cuba), a task he carried out with great effort, great popular support and resounding success. In 1979, Pope John Paul II appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Miami, a position he held until his retirement in 2003. His enormous pastoral work and his identification with the exiled Cuban community made him a spiritual leader equally loved and respected by believers and non-believers alike. Monsignor Roman died in Miami on April 11, 2012. Julio Estorino is a Cuban exiled journalist that resides in the United States since 1963. For over 40 years he closely collaborated with Monsignor Roman.
